Addis Ababa to Welcome Global Black History, Heritage and Education Center

Addis Ababa, December 6, 2023 – The much-anticipated Global Black History, Heritage and Education Center is set to open its doors in Addis Ababa this Friday, December 8, 2023. The establishment of the center in Ethiopia's capital is a landmark decision by the organization's board, underscoring Ethiopia's prominent role in the narrative of Black history globally.

According to the Ethiopian News Agency (ENA), Global Black History, Heritage and Education Center Board Member Robin Walker emphasized the center's crucial role in enabling Black individuals to explore their collective history and shape a brighter future. Walker highlighted the center's commitment to correcting distorted narratives of Black history and empowering Black communities to document their own stories objectively, fostering unity and solidarity.

Fellow Board Member John Mathew pointed out the center's significant role in documenting and sharing untold stories from ancient times. He also noted the center's innovative approach in strengthening ties between Africa and its diaspora, fostering mutual respect and cultural exchange.

Ethiopia's Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Teferi Meles, who accompanied the delegation, underscored Ethiopia's selection as the center's location. Despite numerous global requests, Ethiopia was chosen for its historical significance as the cradle of humankind, its status as a non-colonized nation, its contributions to Black history, and its position as the African Union's headquarters.

President of the Global Black History, Heritage and Education Center, Tsegaye Chemma, revealed that the idea of establishing the center has been in discussion for over two decades, gaining momentum with the "No More" movement. He also noted the African Union Chapter's expansion to include a sixth region representing African descents worldwide, with the new center playing a key role in this initiative.

The Global Black History, Heritage and Education Center, originally a London-based movement, was founded by a diverse group of international experts committed to promoting and preserving Black history and heritage.
