Addis Ababa University Hosts Seminar on East Africa’s Equitable Seaport Access

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia - A seminar focused on the equitable access to seaports in the East African region was convened by Addis Ababa University, drawing participation from prominent Ethiopian scholars and water experts.

The seminar, which commenced this morning at the Institute of Ethiopian Studies within the University, aims to address the current limitations in seaport access in the Horn of Africa. The discussions are geared towards fostering sustainable peace and shared development through the reassessment of port utilization strategies in the region.

Addis Ababa University President, Dr. Samuel Kifle, emphasized in his opening remarks the geopolitical significance of the Horn of Africa. He stressed the necessity for the region to collaboratively utilize resources, including seaports, for mutual benefit and regional integration.

Addressing Ethiopia's landlocked status and its impact on the nation's 120 million population, the seminar highlighted the country's search for a reliable seaport. This need aligns with the principles of reciprocity, mutual benefit, and regional integration.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, responding to queries from members of the House of Peoples' Representatives earlier this week, reiterated Ethiopia's respect for the sovereignty of coastal nations. He proposed a cooperative approach, suggesting that coastal countries could provide Ethiopia with seaport access in exchange for shared benefits from Ethiopia's assets like its leading airline and the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD). The Prime Minister's vision is to foster collective growth and address economic challenges in the region.
