ANC Leads in Most Provinces as South Africa Continues Vote Counting

MIDRAND — As vote counting progresses into its second day for the 2024 National and Provincial Elections, the African National Congress (ANC) is currently leading in the majority of provinces, with notable exceptions in KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape. The counting is part of a rigorous process that includes thorough result validation to ensure accuracy.

According to South African Government News Agency, the latest figures displayed at the National Results Operation Centre (ROC) in Midrand as of 11:45 am on Friday, the ANC is ahead in several key areas. In the Eastern Cape, the ANC has garnered 739,564 votes, significantly leading over the Democratic Alliance (DA) with 138,958 votes and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) with 109,630 votes. So far, 67.65% of the votes have been processed in this province.

In the Free State, the ANC continues to lead with 336,267 votes, with the DA and EFF trailing with 135,814 and 84,928 votes, respectively. Approximately 82.79% of votes have been captured in this region. Gauteng shows a tighter race where the ANC leads with 663,401 votes, followed closely by the DA with 580,761 votes, and the EFF at 253,632 votes.

The new party, Umkhonto Wesizwe (MK) Party, is showing strong performance in its first election, especially in Gauteng with 186,219 votes and leading in KwaZulu-Natal with 625,363 votes, surpassing the ANC's 259,867 votes in that province. This suggests a significant shift in voter preferences in one of the country's most contested regions.

Limpopo, North West, Mpumalanga, and Northern Cape also show the ANC in the lead, with varying degrees of vote processing completed. In the Northern Cape, nearly all votes have been counted, showing the ANC leading with 194,373 votes.

The Electoral Commission (IEC) has emphasized the meticulous nature of the results compilation process, which involves scanning each result slip, double-blind data entry, and independent audits to ensure the integrity of the final results. Chief Electoral Officer Sy Mamabolo highlighted the thorough validation processes during a media briefing on Thursday, underscoring the commitment to transparency and accuracy in this election cycle.

Further updates and a comprehensive progress report on the elections are expected from the IEC at a 4 pm briefing today.
