Cape Town Launches Fire Hydrant Inspection Initiative with EPWP Workers

Cape Town - The City of Cape Town has embarked on an innovative project by enlisting workers from the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) to conduct inspections of the city's fire hydrants. This initiative aims to identify and report any damaged or obstructed hydrants for maintenance, combining job creation with crucial safety measures to protect lives and property.

According to South African Government Agency, Cape Town's extensive road network spans approximately 10,000 kilometers, housing around 57,803 fire hydrants essential for handling fire emergencies. However, vandalism and unauthorized constructions have frequently compromised these hydrants, posing significant risks during fire outbreaks. To combat this issue, the city has recruited 26 job seekers to perform hydrant inspections under the Hydrant Project. Additionally, five individuals with a matric qualification and a valid code B driver's license have been hired as EPWP drivers/supervisors to facilitate the inspection process. All recruits were selected from the city's Jobseekers' Database.

The EPWP participants are undergoing comprehensive on-the-job training, including fire safety awareness, to equip them with the necessary skills for their roles. The drivers and supervisors have also completed a smart driving course, enhancing their employability for future opportunities within the municipal framework.

Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Waste Management, Grant Twigg, praised the project for its dual benefits of providing employment and ensuring public safety at a cost-effective rate. He highlighted the critical importance of maintaining functional fire hydrants to avoid catastrophic outcomes during fires.

For individuals interested in EPWP job opportunities, the city encourages registration at local sub-council offices with a CV, identification documents, and proof of residence. Selection for EPWP roles is conducted randomly from the Jobseekers' Database, ensuring fair and equal opportunities for all applicants.

For additional information on EPWP opportunities, the city has provided a help desk contact number and an email address for inquiries.
