Cape Town Police Sergeant Arrested for Armed Robbery and Illegal Firearm Possession

CAPE TOWN — A 37-year-old police sergeant from the Cape Town Tactical Response Team has been arrested in connection with an armed robbery in Mthumbane Location, Port St Johns, which occurred on Wednesday, July 31, 2024. The sergeant, stationed in Port St Johns, now faces charges of robbery and possession of an unlicensed firearm.

According to South African Police Service, during the incident, the sergeant was allegedly assaulted by victims of the robbery who managed to overpower him and disarm him. The victims then alerted local police, leading to the recovery and confiscation of the firearm. The officer was arrested following these events and is currently under investigation, awaiting a court appearance at Port St Johns Magistrate Court once he recovers from his injuries.

Lieutenant General Nomthetheleli Mene, the Provincial Commissioner, strongly condemned the involvement of law enforcement officers in criminal activities. "This arrest gives a clear signal that SAPS will not tolerate corruption by members whose mandate is to combat crime and protect all citizens," she stated, emphasizing the police's commitment to integrity and accountability within its ranks.
