ADDIS ABABA — The Ethiopian Ministry of Innovation and Technology has underscored the critical role of collaboration between the government and the private sector in driving the country's digital transformation and achieving sustainable development goals. This emphasis was highlighted during a half-day conference focused on enhancing cooperation in the ICT and digital sectors.
According to Ethiopian News Agency, the Minister of Innovation and Technology, working together, employing new mechanisms, and creating favorable conditions are key to realizing Ethiopia's digital aspirations. The conference served as a platform for discussing the importance of strengthening partnerships with the private sector in these areas. Guided by Ethiopia's development plan for 2021-2030, the country launched its Digital Transformation Strategy 2025 in 2020. This strategy is seen as pivotal in bringing about tangible changes in ICT and the digital economy, with a significant role envisioned for the private sector.
Minister Molla emphasized the necessity of further enhancing cooperation between government bodies and private industry to empower Ethiopia's digital economy effectively. He pointed out that such collaboration is vital for providing training programs, knowledge sharing, and other collaborative efforts. The meeting aimed to facilitate an exchange of ideas to identify challenges in the ICT and digital sector and to develop solutions.
Ethiopia, while yet to fully harness its potential in the digital space, is focused on using technology to foster a more prosperous society. The 2025 Digital Strategy of Ethiopia includes five key priorities: the implementation of a digital ID, digital payments, e-governance, e-commerce, and cybersecurity. Supporting these priorities are more targeted strategies, such as the National Financial Inclusion Strategy and the National Bank of Ethiopia's National Digital Payments Strategy. These strategies aim to overhaul the payment ecosystem and contribute to building a cash-lite and financially inclusive economy.
