Addis Ababa, Ethiopia - Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has outlined his government's concerted efforts to elevate the quality of education in Ethiopia. Addressing members of the House of People's Representatives (HPR) today, the Prime Minister detailed the implementation of a new education roadmap.
According to Ethiopian News Agency, the roadmap encompasses seven main pillars, including curriculum reform, improvement of the education system's administration, enhancement of teacher capacity, expansion of educational infrastructure (especially at kindergarten, elementary, and high school levels), refinement of the higher education entrance examination system, initiation of a school feeding program, and a focus on the quality of higher education.
The government has made significant strides in improving the entrance examination for higher education. Rather than establishing new universities or expanding existing ones, around 18,000 kindergartens have been built in collaboration with local communities. This initiative aims to address education quality issues at lower school levels.
PM Abiy also spoke about advancements in technical and vocational training. Ethiopia now boasts 1,400 Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) colleges, with the capacity to enroll approximately 600,000 students. He emphasized that strengthening these efforts is crucial for realizing Ethiopia's vision of prosperity and development.
