Addis Ababa, Ethiopia - Abrehot Library, Ethiopia's largest library, has been officially inducted into the Silk Road International Library Alliance.
According to Ethiopian News Agency, The Silk Road International Library Alliance announced the inclusion of Abrehot Library as its latest member, recognizing the library's success in providing quality services that meet international standards shortly after its establishment. According to the alliance, Abrehot Library has garnered international attention as a hub for knowledge, research, creativity, and its collection of ancient books. This induction marks Abrehot as the 43rd member of the Silk Road International Library Alliance.
Abrehot Library, which opened its doors in January 2022, was inaugurated by Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, who was instrumental in the library's development. The facility, constructed at a cost of over 1.1 billion Birr, houses an extensive collection including over 1.4 million books, 300,000 national research studies, and 1,200,000 international research papers.
The library boasts state-of-the-art facilities, elegant reading spaces, and designated areas for nursing mothers. Additional amenities include a modern cafeteria, meeting halls, an amphitheater, a playground, and a parking lot with a capacity for over a hundred vehicles. The facility also features eight shops offering book-related services.
Providing 24-hour access to its resources, Abrehot Library serves more than 10,000 readers daily, positioning itself as a prominent cultural and intellectual landmark in Ethiopia.
