Gauteng Police Arrest 925 Suspects Over the Weekend, Including DUI Offenders

GAUTENG — In a significant crackdown on crime, Gauteng Police apprehended 925 suspects across the province from Friday, 28 June to Sunday, 30 June 2024, for a range of criminal activities. Among these, 60 individuals were detained for driving under the influence of alcohol.

According to South African Police Service, Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni, the arrests were part of the multi-disciplinary Operation Shanela, primarily conducted in the Ekurhuleni District, where 222 suspects were taken into custody. These individuals faced charges including armed robbery, rape, and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, as well as dealing in drugs and illicit cigarettes.

In Tshwane, over 280 arrests were made for offenses such as drug dealing, possession of dagga, and violations of immigration laws. Johannesburg District saw 209 suspects arrested for possession of unlicensed firearms, suspected stolen property, assault, and robbery.

Additional operations in the West Rand and Sedibeng Districts resulted in the arrest of more than 210 individuals for crimes including possession of unlicensed firearms, suspected stolen vehicles, and drugs.

Lieutenant General Mthombeni highlighted the crucial role of community cooperation in these operations, noting that many arrests were made possible by tips from the public. The suspects are expected to appear in various magistrate courts starting today.
