Hawks Arrest Man in Klerksdorp for Corruption Involving Illicit Cigarettes

NORTH WEST - A strategic operation by the Hawks' Serious Commercial Crime Investigation unit culminated in the arrest of a 38-year-old suspect in Klerksdorp on Friday, March 15, 2024. The operation underscores the determined efforts to eliminate corruption and illicit activities within the province.

According to South African Police Service, Reacting to a tip-off received on March 14, the Hawks targeted a warehouse allegedly used to conceal smuggled cigarettes. The initial raid led to the detention of six undocumented individuals. Subsequent investigations unveiled an attempt to corrupt the legal process when an individual offered a bribe to secure the release of the detainees. An entrapment operation was executed, resulting in the arrest of the suspect after he handed over R4000 to an investigating officer.

The arrested individual is scheduled to face the Klerksdorp Magistrates' Court on charges of corruption on Monday, March 18, 2024. Major General Patrick Mbotho of the North West Hawks lauded the unwavering integrity and professionalism of the officers involved, ensuring that justice is served and criminal elements are held accountable.
