MIDRAND, South Africa — As the final votes are being tallied at the national Results Operations Centre in Midrand, IEC Chairperson Mosotho Moepya reassured the public and media that the election results management system remains fully functional and secure. This announcement came amid the critical phase of compiling results for the 2024 National and Provincial Elections.
According to South African Government News Agency, who addressed the media on Saturday afternoon, the results management system was meticulously developed to comply with South Africa’s electoral legislation and was not sourced from off-the-shelf software. "This system was crafted specifically to meet our legal standards and was enhanced in response to recent legislative amendments," Moepya stated. He further highlighted the involvement of service providers in the electoral process, noting that their selection was transparent and their services were publicly announced.
The system, tested and reviewed by professional auditors from Deloitte and Touche South Africa, received certification for its functionality and compliance. Moepya also pointed out that the auditing process was made accessible to political parties through the national Political Liaison Committees, continuing a tradition of transparency in the electoral process.
The IEC Chair acknowledged a technical issue that occurred with the results' leaderboards on Friday, describing it as a "regrettable" glitch that was quickly resolved without impacting the integrity of the results management system. He urged all parties and citizens to remain engaged and report any discrepancies, emphasizing the openness of the process.
Moepya concluded by noting that any remaining results are still undergoing rigorous audits by Grant Thornton to ensure transparency and accuracy, reflecting the commitment of all involved parties to deliver a credible election outcome.
