International Dignitaries and Visitors Captivated by Ethiopia’s Timket Festival


Addis Ababa – the Ethiopian Timket Festival, marking the baptism of Jesus, garnered admiration and fascination from ambassadors and tourists alike. The event, held at Jan Meda, was celebrated for its rich cultural and spiritual significance, particularly highlighted by the Ethiopian Orthodox Church’s clergy and faithful in traditional attire.



According to Ethiopian News Agency, Agostino Palese, the festival not only reflects Ethiopia’s history and religious heritage but also emphasizes the importance of preserving such traditions. Palese, attending for the second time, expressed his respect for Ethiopian culture and the historical significance of the event. Similarly, Israeli Ambassador to Ethiopia, Alelign Admasu, noted the unique timing of Timket, coinciding with the harvest season, adding to its joyous nature. Admasu mentioned the significance of the Ethiopian Epiphany, now recognized by UNESCO, and its potential for global celebration.



The festival’s spiritual essence was also highlighted by Benjamin Kalkum, a German Church board member, who was struck by the ceremony’s profound spiritual meaning and the joyous expression of faith. Mareike Gries, a first-time visitor from Germany, shared her transformative experience, praising the culture, the Epiphany ceremony, and Ethiopian cuisine. She felt a deep connection to the culture, especially while wearing traditional Ethiopian attire.
