PIETERMARTIZBURG – The KwaZulu-Natal government has announced a R150.5 billion budget aimed at stimulating economic growth and creating jobs, with a focus on governance and efficiency in public spending.
According to South African Government News Agency, the KwaZulu-Natal Finance MEC, during his budget presentation at the provincial legislature, the budget is designed to support a journey towards a capable and ethical developmental state. Emphasizing good governance, Rodgers outlined measures to enhance financial management across all government departments and public entities, including adopting a zero-tolerance stance against corruption, fruitless, and wasteful expenditure.
Rodgers stressed the importance of responsible financial stewardship and effective utilization of public funds in accordance with the Public Finance Management Act. He also called on senior officials across departments to share best practices and improve public service through rigorous monitoring and evaluation of programs over the Medium-Term Expenditure Framework.
The MEC addressed the challenges posed by recent veld fires in the region, affirming the government's commitment to supporting the recovery of affected communities. He highlighted the ongoing assessment of the damage and mentioned potential classification of the incidents as a provincial disaster. Resources have been earmarked to aid in the recovery of those impacted, both financially and psychologically.
Rodgers expressed gratitude towards social partners and businesses that have supported recovery efforts and urged more stakeholders to assist in rebuilding the lives of the affected residents.
