Northern Cape Crackdown: Seven Arrested for Illegal Mining

NORTHERN CAPE - In a targeted operation against illegal mining activities, seven suspects were arrested in the Northern Cape. The operation was conducted by a coalition of forces including the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), the Department of Home Affairs Immigration Services, and local law enforcement units.

According to South African Government News Agency, the arrests were part of a collaborative effort involving multiple disciplinary teams such as Springbok K9, Port Nolloth Crime Prevention Units, and Provincial Traffic officers. The operation took place in the Frances Baard District where the suspects were detained for illegal mining activities, and several undocumented foreign nationals were also held for verification purposes by immigration officials.

During the operations, police confiscated numerous mining implements believed to be used in illegal mining activities. Additional enforcement actions included vehicle checkpoints at the Port Nolloth/Kleinsee intersection and Bontakoe informal settlement, resulting in the detention of 15 more undocumented individuals. This brings the total number of arrests to 22.

SAPS has urged the public to assist in curbing illegal activities by reporting any suspicious or unlawful actions, including illegal mining, to the SAPS Crime Stop number at 08600 10111.
