NAMAKWA DISTRICT — The South African police and National Defence Force's ongoing "Vala Umgodi" operation has intensified its crackdown on illegal mining activities in the Northern Cape, resulting in multiple arrests and seizures this past week.
According to South African Police Service, the joint operation, which began on Monday, July 1, 2024, has led to the arrest of seven foreign nationals for violations of the Immigration Act in the Bontakoei, Koeingnaas, and Twee Pad mining areas. The operation also resulted in the confiscation of illicit mining equipment and suspected diamond-bearing gravel. The Department of Home Affairs Immigration Services is processing the suspects for court appearances.
In addition to these arrests, police have also issued fines for violations of the National Road Traffic Act during vehicle checkpoints around Kommaggas and Hondeklipbaai. The authorities continue to urge the public to report any suspicious activities related to illegal mining, emphasizing the substantial financial impact such activities have on the state and the country's economy.
