Paul Mashatile Reappointed as Deputy President of South Africa

JOHANNESBURG — President Cyril Ramaphosa has appointed Paul Mashatile as the Deputy President of South Africa, a position he previously held in the country's sixth administration. This announcement was made during a national address on Sunday evening, where President Ramaphosa introduced his new cabinet.

According to South African Government News Agency, Paul Mashatile brings extensive experience back to the role of Deputy President, having assumed the position initially in March 2023 following David Mabuza’s resignation. Mashatile's tenure in the sixth administration was marked by significant responsibilities, including leading the Government's business in Parliament and spearheading efforts in land reform and agricultural support.

Mashatile was also instrumental in implementing rapid response interventions to improve service delivery and address issues in critical service areas. He played a key role in coordinating government programs through the District Development Model, aiming to enhance municipal functions and respond to community concerns effectively.

Additionally, Mashatile led the South African National AIDS Council and the country's efforts against HIV and AIDS. His international duties included acting as a Special Envoy on South Sudan and leading peace missions across the continent. Domestically, he chaired important Cabinet Committees on Governance, State Capacity, Institutional Development, Justice, Crime Prevention, and Security.

Before his roles in the national government, Mashatile was known for his leadership in the Gauteng Provincial Government, holding multiple key positions including as the Minister of Arts and Culture from 2010 to 2014. His political career was notably shaped by his activism against apartheid, during which he was detained for four years by the apartheid regime.

Paul Mashatile's reappointment as Deputy President is seen as a strategic move by President Ramaphosa to utilize his broad expertise in driving national development and addressing pressing social and economic challenges.
