ADDIS ABABA – During his speech at the 37th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the Heads of State and Government of the African Union, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva highlighted the need for new global governance structures that address current challenges and emphasize the critical role of the Global South, particularly Africa, in shaping a more equitable world order.
According to Africa News Agency, the intertwined futures of Brazil and Africa are pivotal in the development of a new global governance capable of overcoming contemporary challenges. He emphasized the importance of collaboration between governments, businesses, and civil societies to empower local communities, particularly through entrepreneurship. This collaboration, he noted, is crucial for creating jobs and ensuring financial freedom for women, which he argued could significantly contribute to economic growth and sustainability.
Lula underscored the relevance of multipolarity in the 21st century, rejecting the restoration of a global system based on ideological blocs. He advocated for the consolidation of the BRICS nations as a primary platform for the voice of emerging countries. Further stressing the significance of developing nations in global affairs, Lula mentioned that these countries must be included in any new phase of global expansion that aims to combine growth with environmental preservation and reduced inequality.
The president also addressed specific issues facing Africa and the Global South, including the need for fairer economic systems that do not concentrate wealth among a few. He criticized the neoliberal global model for exacerbating poverty and inequality and dismissed the solutions offered by the far right. Instead, Lula called for inclusive social projects that can lead to stable, democratic, and sovereign societies free from hunger and unemployment.
On the issue of peace in the Middle East, Lula condemned violence from all sides and advocated for the establishment of a Palestinian State recognized by the United Nations as part of a broader push for peace and stability in the region.
Highlighting Brazil's commitment to growth and ecological transformation, Lula outlined his administration's efforts, including reviving democracy and enhancing participatory governance. He discussed Brazil's strides in education, including initiatives to prevent school dropouts and expand scholarship programs for African students.
In closing, President Lula reiterated the inseparable link between Brazil and Africa within the Global South, stressing the mutual benefits of their rapprochement and the joint challenges they face in striving towards a just and sustainable global order.
