SHARPEVILLE: With the approach of South Africa's 7th democratic election for national and provincial government on 29 May 2024, President Cyril Ramaphosa emphasized the importance of maintaining the integrity of the electoral process. Speaking during the Human Rights Day commemoration in Sharpeville, President Ramaphosa warned against any threats, intimidation, and undemocratic actions that could undermine the electoral process. He underscored the achievements of regularity, peacefulness, fairness, and integrity of elections as foundational to democracy.

According to South African Government News Agency, beyond the act of voting, it is essential to broaden opportunities for citizens to participate in decision-making processes. Ramaphosa highlighted the need for strengthening consultation processes within government entities and promoting active citizenship as crucial for democracy to thrive. He also acknowledged the progress made in building a democracy that recognizes the equal worth of every individual but noted that there is still a journey ahead to ensure everyone can exercise their fundamental freedoms equally.
