Ramaphosa Addresses Youth Employment and Education Ahead of State of the Nation

CAPE TOWN - In a significant pre-State of the Nation Address (SONA) meeting, President Cyril Ramaphosa engaged with young people at the Belhar Sports Complex in Cape Town, focusing on youth unemployment and education initiatives.

According to South African Government News Agency, the gathering aimed to review progress made under the Presidential Employment Stimulus (PES) and Youth Employment Intervention (PYEI) over the past three years. These initiatives have reportedly generated over 1.7 million job opportunities, primarily benefiting the youth.

During the event on Tuesday, President Ramaphosa emphasized the sixth administration's commitment to addressing the youth unemployment crisis by developing numerous programs tailored for young individuals. He highlighted the establishment of the Youth Employment Service, which encourages the private sector to offer on-the-job learning opportunities to young people. The PYEI was also mentioned as a significant step in creating vast opportunities for the youth.

Reflecting on the 30 years since the end of apartheid, Ramaphosa noted the government's efforts to enhance education access and quality for young South Africans. Initiatives include the implementation of no-fee schools and a massive feeding program that serves nine million children weekly, alongside substantial support for higher education through the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS), benefiting 1.2 million young people.

The President acknowledged the need for job creation to match the rising number of graduates, citing the role of both the government and the private sector in this endeavor. He reassured the youth of the government's unwavering commitment to providing educational and employment opportunities, aiming to involve millions of young people in various programs and ensure their successful entry into the workforce.

President Ramaphosa's address underscored the government's dedication to preparing South Africa's youth for the future through education, skill development, and job creation, reaffirming an irrevocable commitment to the empowerment of young South Africans.
