SADC Observation Mission Approves South Africa’s 2024 Elections

JOHANNESBURG — The Southern African Development Community Electoral Observation Mission (SEOM) has officially endorsed the conduct of the 2024 National and Provincial Elections in South Africa, describing the process as orderly and peaceful. The elections, overseen by South Africa's Electoral Commission (IEC), took place on Wednesday, 29 May.

According to South African Government News Agency, the former Vice President of Zambia and head of SEOM, the mission deployed 84 observers across all nine provinces who reported that the elections were conducted in a calm and peaceful environment. Kavindele noted that the few isolated incidents of political violence did not significantly disrupt the overall electoral process. He praised the South African Police Service for effectively maintaining peace and highlighted several best practices by the IEC, including online voter registration and the facilitation of voting for South Africans living abroad.
