South Africa Extends Comment Period for National Biodiversity Economy Strategy

PRETORIA — The South African Ministry of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment announced an extension to the public commentary period for the revised draft National Biodiversity Economy Strategy (NBES), initially published on March 8, 2024.

According to South African Government News Agency, the extension, detailed under Government Notice No. 4492 in Government Gazette No. 50279, allows an additional 14 days beyond the original deadline of March 22, 2024. This decision follows requests from stakeholders for more time to review the document. The Minister emphasized the importance of widespread discussion on the strategy, particularly at the forthcoming Biodiversity Economy and Investment Indaba.

The NBES aims to balance conservation efforts with socio-economic development, adhering to Section 24 of the South African Constitution. This section mandates reasonable legislative and other measures to ensure environmental protection for both present and future generations, promoting conservation and sustainable natural resource use.

The revised draft strategy, informed by the Cabinet-approved White Paper on Conservation and Sustainable Use of South Africa's Biodiversity from June 14, 2023, seeks to ensure the effective conservation and sustainable use of the country’s biodiversity. This approach aims for inclusive and equitable socio-economic development.

The public is invited to submit comments within the newly extended timeframe, starting from March 22, 2024, or from the date of publication in newspapers, whichever is later. Submissions can be made via post, hand-delivery, or email to the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, specifically to Mr. Khorommbi Matibe. Additionally, inquiries regarding the notice or the Socio-Economic Impact Assessment Study on the Revised NBES can be directed to Mr. Matibe.

The full text of the gazette notice and details for submission can be accessed through the Department's official website.
