Pretoria, South Africa – President Cyril Ramaphosa has expressed his condolences following the death of Dr. Sam Motsuenyane, a pioneering figure in the South African business community, who passed away at the age of 97. Dr. Motsuenyane was a founding member of the National African Federated Chamber of Commerce (NAFCOC) and played a crucial role in establishing the African Bank during the apartheid era.

According to South African Government News Agency, Dr. Motsuenyane's contributions extended over six decades, significantly shaping South Africa's economic landscape. "The passing of Dr. Sam Motsuenyane 60 years after the establishment of NAFCOC is a profound reminder of the breadth, durability, and longevity of his vision and passion for self-reliance and development," the President remarked.

Dr. Motsuenyane's career was marked by numerous roles including entrepreneur, leader of organized business, parliamentarian, and diplomat, notably serving as South Africa's first ambassador to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. His commitment to the principles of ubuntu and self-sufficiency influenced national policies, ensuring that the constitutional rights to choose one's trade, occupation, or profession are safeguarded.

The President also recalled Dr. Motsuenyane's recognition as an Esteemed Member of the National Order of the Baobab in Gold, awarded for his significant personal achievements. This accolade was bestowed upon him in 2002 as a tribute to his contributions to the country's then-nascent democracy.

President Ramaphosa extended condolences to Dr. Motsuenyane's family, friends, and associates, acknowledging his passing on the eve of the 2024 National Orders Ceremony. "Dr. Motsuenyane's passing causes us to recall the honour bestowed on him in 2002 as the nation paid tribute to an outstanding patriot and source of inspiration for our democracy," he said, concluding with a wish for peace for Dr. Motsuenyane's soul.
