Midrand - The 2024 National and Provincial Elections in South Africa have significantly tested the country’s democratic institutions, systems integrity, and the resolve of its citizens, according to Mosotho Moepya, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission of South Africa. Moepya made these remarks while announcing the election results at the national Results Operations Centre (ROC) in Midrand.

According to South African Government News Agency, this year’s elections were notably contentious, but were conducted with an emphasis on transparency, fairness, and adherence to democratic standards, which he declared free and fair. Despite numerous challenges, including targeted attacks on commission staff, disinformation campaigns, and intimidation efforts, the commission maintained its dedication to upholding South Africa’s constitutional mandate.

The Electoral Commission implemented robust measures to protect the integrity of the election process, underscoring the significance of these elections in the ongoing maturation of South Africa’s democratic systems. Moepya highlighted the peaceful nature of the electoral period, attributing it to the proactive participation of the South African people.

The elections, held on Wednesday, May 29, 2024, saw millions of voters attend over 23,000 polling stations nationwide. Additional arrangements were made for citizens abroad and those needing special accommodations, ensuring comprehensive voter participation. These efforts marked a continuation of the democratic foundation laid by the pivotal 1994 elections.
