Pretoria - Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga has affirmed that all necessary measures have been taken to ensure the smooth progression of this year's final matric examinations, as students enter their last week of testing. The Minister provided this update during a media briefing in Pretoria on Sunday.
According to South African Government News Agency, with only six National Senior Certificate (NSC) papers remaining, the department has provided comprehensive support to the students, including materials and organizational efforts like matric camps. The NSC examinations began on October 30, 2023, with over 717,377 full-time candidates and 181,143 part-time candidates from the public education system registered to write the final exams across 6,898 centers nationwide.
Minister Motshekga noted that, as of December 1, 225 papers had been completed, with only three days left in the examination schedule. She expressed gratitude to all stakeholders involved in the successful administration of the exams.
In addition to academic support, the Minister emphasized the importance of safety as matriculants celebrate the end of their exams. She expressed concern over the increase in risky behaviors, such as excessive alcohol consumption and unlawful activities, often seen in post-exam celebrations known as 'pens down' parties. Motshekga urged parents, communities, and caregivers to guide and support the students in celebrating responsibly and staying safe.
