Midrand - Ahead of tonight's election results declaration in Midrand, the Justice, Crime Prevention, and Security (JCPS) Cluster has affirmed its readiness to address any threats to stability. The cluster detailed its preparedness measures, emphasizing the enforcement of law and order throughout the election process and beyond.
According to South African Government News Agency, South African law enforcement agencies are prepared to maintain peace and stability as they have during the election period. Cele highlighted that any attempts to undermine the state's authority or disrupt the constitutional order would be met with appropriate action. The National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (NATJOINTS) has confirmed its readiness to ensure a peaceful environment following the election results announcement.
The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) is set to announce the election results, with the JCPS cluster reinforcing that the IEC has the sole authority to declare the results according to the law. The Minister noted that legal mechanisms are in place for any disputes regarding the electoral process, and these must be strictly adhered to without resorting to threats or instability.
Defence and Military Veterans Minister Thandi Modise called for respect for the Constitution and mutual rights. She addressed the media, stating that the defence department has learned from past incidents, such as the July 2021 unrest, and is now better prepared to respond promptly and effectively to any disturbances. Modise stressed that no external assistance is needed for the department to perform its duties, and any infringement on citizens' rights would not be tolerated.
Minister in the Presidency, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, also reiterated the importance of adhering to the law, noting that all political parties had signed a code of conduct governing their behavior during the elections. She warned that violations of this code would be enforced.
