Pretoria - In a recent statement, Transport Minister Barbara Creecy emphasized the critical role of a well-functioning transport sector in driving economic success in South Africa. Addressing attendees at the opening of the South African Transport Conference in Pretoria, Creecy outlined the current challenges facing the sector, including road safety, logistical constraints, and infrastructure needs.

According to South African Government News Agency, the nation's roads and rail systems are fundamental to not only national connectivity but also to economic interactions with the rest of Africa and beyond. The Minister highlighted the ongoing issues plaguing the transport sector, such as poor road conditions and inefficient freight handling, which have led to economic downturns, investment declines, and increased unemployment. These problems underscore the urgent need for robust transport infrastructure that ensures efficient, safe, and affordable movement across the country.

Creecy also detailed the strategic focus of the 7th Administration, which is aimed at addressing these challenges over the next five years. This includes enhancing key logistics corridors essential for exports like coal and iron ore, easing congestion at major border crossings and national highways, and tackling issues like cable theft and maintenance backlogs at Transnet facilities. Additionally, the National Logistics Crisis Committee (NLCC), established last year and chaired by President Ramaphosa, has been tasked with spearheading a coordinated governmental response to these logistical challenges.

The Minister also acknowledged the efforts of her predecessor, Sindisiwe Chikunga, in setting up the NLCC and fostering greater collaboration between the private and public sectors. Recent improvements cited by Creecy include reduced anchoring times at the Port of Durban and the reopening of passenger rail lines previously affected by infrastructure damage. With 28 out of 40 priority lines now operational and 256 stations fully functional as of March, the ongoing projects aim to revitalize strategic commuter corridors, ensuring reliable and economical public rail services for the citizens.
