CAPE TOWN - Schools across the Cape Winelands, Overberg Education Districts, and the Helderberg basin area in the Western Cape were shuttered on Monday following severe storm warnings issued by the South African Weather Service (SAWS). The closures come in response to a Level 9 warning for potentially damaging winds and rain forecasted across many parts of the province.
According to South African Government News Agency, spokesperson for Western Cape Education MEC David Maynier, the decision to close the schools was made with considerable caution, prioritizing the safety of learners and school staff. The SAWS's Level 9 warning, indicating a high risk of adverse weather conditions in the Overberg and southern Cape Winelands, prompted the action. Mauchline emphasized that the department usually aims to keep schools operational but was compelled to act in light of the severe weather forecasts.
The closures, initially set for Monday, 8 April 2024, were announced after reports of damage to several schools caused by the high winds began to emerge. The department's infrastructure team is currently assessing the extent of the damage. Mauchline stated that communication regarding the closures and any necessary updates would be directly conveyed to parents by the affected schools.
Further, Mauchline mentioned the possibility of ad hoc closures of select schools if structural damages necessitate such actions. The department plans to reevaluate the weather conditions on Monday to decide if additional closures will be required for Tuesday.
